When the body metabolizes omega-3 fatty acids, it creates endocannabinoids, a class of compounds that help reduce pain and inflammation. New research from the University of Illinois finds one class of these metabolites shows anti-cancer properties in mice.
The Illini 4000 are 20 bicyclists who are spending the summer cycling from coast to coast, to raise money for cancer research and support groups. Some University of Illinois administrators joined the group of mostly U of I students Tuesday morning in Rockville in western Indiana, for their ride to Champaign-Urbana Illinois and the U of I’s flagship campus there.
The Illini 4000 is gearing up for its annual, coast-to coast bike trip to raise money for cancer research and awareness. The group--made up primarily of University of Illinois students--has already raised $90,000 towards its $100,000 dollar goal.
Cancer Community @ Illinois in partnership with Carle Cancer Center will launch the Cancer Scholars for Translational and Applied Research (C*STAR) graduate educational program in the fall. The C*STAR program will give funding for six existing University of Illinois graduate students to work on a specific cancer research project for up to three years alongside a faculty member from the Cancer Community @ Illinois and a clinician mentor from Carle.
