The University of Illinois' Board of Trustees is has launched an initiative to boost system-wide enrollment to more than 90,000 students by 2021. Thursday's meeting also saw the election of a new Trustees' chair, Dr. Timothy Koritz, and approval to freeze in-state tuition rates for a third straight year. Meanwhile, a number of students are again calling for the U of I to declare the school a 'sanctuary campus' to help those who are in the country illegally.

A reporter for Inside Higher Ed has talked with university administrators across the country about how they are handling the "sanctuary campus" issue, both in rhetoric and in practice.  Illinois Public Media's Brian Moline spoke with Inside Higher Ed's Elizabeth Redden.

University of Illinois President Tim Killeen says the school’s three campuses can not serve as a sanctuary for undocumented students - citing the need to uphold state and federal laws. In a mass e-mail Tuesday, Killeen says the sanctuary concept is not well defined. But he says leaders will continue to do all they can within the law to support and protect all students, including those who are undocumented.

With ongoing efforts at the University of Illinois and other colleges to declare themselves sanctuary campuses, US Senator Dick Durbin says he supports efforts to protect students who may have entered the country illegally or overstayed their visa – as long as they haven't committed a crime.
