Christmas Eve in Music
Hear some lesser know, but just as festive, Christmas music.

Tonight it is music by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Sir Edward Elgar. One wonders why Vaughan Williams was never officially conferred the title of "Sir".
Both symphonies on tonight's program are known for their daring...Beethoven's 3rd, the "Eroica" points the 'symphony' in a new direction; Vaughan Williams carries on the 'tradition' of being innovative in his 6th Symphony.
Piano + string quartet is the expected instrumentation for the piano quintet. Vaughan Williams used one of each: violin, viola, cello, double bass. here the sonic difference in that chamber ensemble tonight.
Tonight's program "A Tribute to Arnold Jacobs" features current CSO Principal Tubist playing Vaughan Williams' "Tuba Concerto". Arnold Jacobs was Principal Tubist with the CSO from 1944 to 1988. The program celebrates Jacobs' 100th birthdate [which recently passed on June 11, 2015].
