Oral History Interview: Constance Edwards
Constance Edwards of Frankfort, Illinois served as an officer in the Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War from 1967 until 1968. She nursed the wounded at the 24th Evacuation Hospital in South Vietnam. Edwards was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama and is the middle of nine children. Her career in the military began at Tuskegee University when was recruited by the Army as a nursing student.
Edwards talks about her experiences in Vietnam, the bonds she made with some of her patients, serving P-O-Ws, dealing with racism and harassment, facing PTSD, and claiming pride in her Vietnam service years after her return to the states.
