On Saturday, June 9, Mid-American Gardener fans will get on board the bus with Master Gardener and interim host Sandy Mason for a day of garden fun. We leave Campbell Hall and head south with our break at Alwerdt’s Garden Center in Altamont. Owner Nick Alwerdt will personally lead the tour with a brief history and scope of the Garden Center, showcasing how he has applied his degree in fine arts to his unique designs. Alwerdt’s offers a wide range of landscape, gardening services, and accessories with over five acres of floral display gardens.

Our travel continue to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Upon arrival, we will distribute lunch cards and take a 30-minute tram ride to get an overview of the entire gardens. This is your opportunity to plan where you’d like to wander at your leisure after lunch. The tram returns us to the Sassafras Café. After you finish your lunch, you’re free to visit any of the gardens and displays, including founder Henry Shaw’s original 1850 estate home. Perhaps you’ll compare the Japanese garden to the Chinese garden or visit the Climatron, children’s garden, or the pioneer village. This are just a few of the attractions on the 79 acre botanical gardens.

This garden trip is available as a thank you for a donation of $150 or more ($12.50 per month) to Illinois Public Media. Reserve your spot online now by selecting "Garden Bus Trip to St Louis" from the thank-you gifts.
