‘One Good Eye’ Policy In Illinois Prisons

‘One good eye is enough’. That’s what some inmates in Illinois prisons say they were told by medical staff when they sought treatment for eye surgery. 

Other inmates alleged similar treatment by medical staff according to court affidavits, that they were told one eye was sufficient to go about their daily activities in prison. We heard how the Department of Corrections has responded. Jennifer Vollen- Katz is the Executive Director of the John Howard Association and Shannaon Heffernan who reported on the policy for WBEZ joined us.
