A deep look into the past and future of Native American mascots

An Illini basketball player wore Chief Illiniwek sneakers during a game last fall — sparking many reactions. The Native American Guardians Association claims that 90% of Native Americans actually support Indian mascots.
Joseph Gone has spent decades studying these questions — as a psychologist, as a member of the Aaniiih-Gros Ventre Tribal Nation, and as a University of Illinois graduate student who campaigned against Chief Illiniwek in the 1990's.
He's giving a talk later this month at the U of I and joins the program today.
