Acclaimed pianist Conrad Tao discusses creating classical music, his Illinois roots

Brantley Gutierrez
Conrad Tao was born in 1994 in Urbana, Illinois. He was a prodigy and it is said he started playing piano by ear when he was just 18 months old. Tao's first recital was at age four. He was performing with orchestras a few years after that, and had performances of music he composed himself featured on National Public Radio broadcasts starting at age ten.
Tao's family moved with him first to the Chicago suburbs, and then to New York when he was nine years old and that’s where he’s based today.
Tao is set to return to Illinois this week- to open the new season of the Nova Linea Musica series. It’s a solo concert of contemporary classical music scheduled for Wednesday evening at Guarneri Hall in downtown Chicago. He joins the program today.
