During the COVID-19 pandemic, residents of Illinois have bought more guns and applied for more firearm permits than any other time in history, according to state police. Gun retailers saw the greatest increase in sales to Black customers; The 21st spoke to the president of the 761st Gun Club about what it’s like being a Black gun owner in Illinois and preserving the rights of African American gun ownership in the Chicagoland area. The 761st Gun Club is a nonprofit organization focused on preserving the rights of African American gun ownership in the Chicagoland area.
