Enslaved and freed Black Americans were once required to carry these badges, now they’re on display in Springfield

For the first time ever, the ALPLM will display a badge that African Americans, whether free or enslaved, were required to wear in Charleston, SC, when outside their homes. Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum
On the last day of Black History Month in 2025, we discussed two pieces on display for the first time at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. It includes an identification badge for Black Americans (enslaved or freed) from Charleston, South Carolina in the 1810s and other items.
