Filing Complaints In Prison

If you’re locked up in an Illinois prison and have a complaint, you’re supposed to file what’s called a “grievance” to get it resolved. But reporting from two organizations say the complaints are not being answered.

The 21st talks with a criminal justice reporter and the Executive Director of the John Howard Association of Illinois about problem solving in the Illinois prisons and what the cost is to the system for ignoring grievances.

Guests:

Shannon Heffernan, Criminal justice reporter, WBEZ Chicago, part of the ProPublica Local Reporting Network

Jenny Vollen-Katz, Executive Director, John Howard Association of Illinois
