Former flight attendant discusses childhood fear of flying in memoir

When Kathleen Davis was eight years old, her parents took her on a  vacation to Havana, Cuba. They drove most of the way — from their home in Waterloo, Iowa to the Florida Keys. But of course the last leg of the journey would have to be by air.

There was only one problem — Davis was mortally terrified of flying. She was so horrified that after the return trip she vowed she would never fly again. So how did someone with that experience end up with a 35-year career as a flight attendant?

That is one of the questions Davis set out to answer in her new memoir called “The Closest Exit May Be Behind You: Memoirs of a Fearful Flight Attendant.” Davis is now based in Bloomington, Illinois, and joins us in our studios in Urbana.
