Game On for High School Sports

Joe Deacon/WCBU

As schools head into the spring semester, it’s “game on” for high school sports in Illinois. On January 27, 2021, the Illinois High School Association released it’s spring sports schedule (see below). Fall sports like football and basketball will also be able to resume play. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to cost the lives of thousands every day, the decision to resume high school sports is not without risks. The Illinois High School Association’s schedule includes “higher risk” sports like basketball, football and wrestling according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Three guests joined us to discuss safety measures in place and the risks involved.

Guests:

Craig Anderson, executive director for the IHSA for the llinois High School Association.

Carolyn Wendte, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame girls high school basketball coach for Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City High Schools, Athletic Director at Beecher City Jr/Sr High School where she is also a H.S. math teacher.

Jeff Woods, professor in Kinesiology and Community Health, Director of the Center on Health, Aging, and Disability (CHAD), and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Applied Health Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
