Illinois malls are emptying out; a new book looks at the role of shopping centers in our lives

Malls have become a cultural icon in America, even as some of them slowly die off. Author Alexandra Lange talks about the role the mall plays in our lives in her book Meet Me By The Fountain: An Inside History of the Mall. Springfield's White Oaks Mall is losing the last of its traditional anchor stores this month when Macy's closes. In Bloomington-Normal, Eastland Mall is down to a handful of stores. And just a few days ago, WCIA, the CBS station in Central Illinois, described Danville's Village Mall in a story as "looking more like a ghost town."
