Northern Illinois University President Lisa Freeman talks enrollment, football and funding

Northern Illinois University in DeKalb enrolled just over 16,000 students in the fall of 2025. That’s up from last year but still down from the mid 2000s, when more than 25,000 people attended NIU Dr. Lisa C. Freeman has been at NIU since 2010. She was appointed president in 2018. Her academic work is in biology and pharmacology. She spoke about NIU's enrollment, challenges to higher education from the Trump administration, lack of state funding, football, and more.
