Podcast investigates big prisons in small Illinois towns
Prisons are incredibly secretive places. It’s not just the walls that surround them that make them unknown to people on the outside—they’re often located in small, isolated towns. Communication with loved ones and journalists is monitored, and there are blindspots in the prisons themselves where guards can misbehave and misconduct can go unchecked.
‘Motive,’ an investigative podcast from Chicago NPR station WBEZ, explores these blindspots in the prison system. The 21st was joined was joined by the podcast's host to discuss what she's found.
