Real or Artificial: Deciding on a Christmas Tree

Christmas season is upon us. You and your family may be basking in the excitement by picking out, and decorating a Christmas tree. One decision you may be deciding between for a Christmas tree is: real or artificial? According to the American Christmas Tree Association, 82% of American households opted for artificial trees in 2019. But if you are one of the 18% who go for the real thing, you could be supporting an important agricultural industry right here in Illinois.

According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, as of 2017, there were 182 real Christmas tree growers in Illinois, down from 212 in 2012.

The 21st was joined with two of them to hear about their experiences, and hear advice for choosing the perfect tree.
