At the end of 2024, more than 80,000 federal workers were based in Illinois. Since President DonaldTrump re-entered office in January 2025, bringing with him billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, those workers have been a prominent target in the administration's drive to aggressively downsize the federal government. But at what cost?
