UIUC Grammy-Nominated Singer Sophia Byrd

 

Not yet graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, singer Sophia Byrd has already been nominated for two Grammy Awards. As part of an ensemble for her work in “Place,” a 2018 work by composer Ted Hearne and poet Saul Williams, the piece explores the effects of gentrification in a Brooklyn neighborhood.

The work has been nominated for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance and Best Contemporary Classical Composition at the Grammy’s which will take place this Sunday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m.

To speak more about her experience getting nominated and all that lead up to it, The 21st was joined by Byrd.
