University of Illinois Professor Jailed in Pakistan

Earlier this month, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign professor Dr. Shahbaz Gill was arrested in Pakistan on charges of sedition. In an interview with local station ARY News on the day preceding his arrest, while discussing the country’s current political situation, Dr. Gill apparently urged Pakistani soldiers not to accept any “illegal” orders from military leadership. There are reports that Dr. Gill was subjected to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse in the form of electical shocks while in police custody.

The 21st spoke to an expert in international relations and global studies to discuss his relationship to the University and how this complex situation fits into Pakistan’s current political climate.
