Russia never lacks for musicians, and that goes for conductors as well. If you were a Russian conductor in the mid-twentieth century who wanted an international career, you were in trouble. First there was World War II, then the Cold War. Some like Kirill Kondrashin could ride to fame accompanying Van Cliburn, others had to wait behind the iron curtain for their chance at the big time. On Saturday at 11, we will hear from these maestros of the Stalin period.
