A Visit to the Japan House for Some Late Summer Fun

 

 

 

Jennifer Nelson and Dr. Doug Williams join host Tinisha Spain at the Japan House in Urbana to discuss some topics related to late summer gardening.

Jen explains the unique genetic feature of the purple tomato, which is an open-pollinated variety. She describes the process of saving seeds from purple tomatoes, including the need to remove the gelatinous coating

Dr. Doug discusses his work with tree planting programs in Chicagoland and Illinois. He introduces a guide for selecting and caring for trees, emphasizing the importance of proper planting and pruning. The guide includes a list of trees with various characteristics, such as flowers, fall color, and fragrance.

Diana Liao, the Education and Engagement Specialist at Japan House, chats with Tinisha about the Japan House's role as a teaching facility for traditional Japanese arts and culture.
