Mid-American Gardener

It’s Fall! So it’s time to think spring!

On this episode of Mid-American Gardener, Jen Nelson and Rusty Maulding share their houseplant care tips, soil management recommendations, and ways to start prepping your garden for the colder months.

Jen Nelson kicks off the show with a “heartwarming” story. Back in February 2022, Jen picked up a hoya hearts houseplant. At that time, it was just a single heart-shaped leaf in a small pot. Just the other week, Jen was ready to give up on it as it wasn’t growing and is known to be tricky to propagate, but her patience paid off. The plant surprised her by sprouting two new heart-shaped leaves after almost two years. Jen plans to repot her hoya the spring and will report back!

Rusty shares his insights into planting trees and the importance of patience. He emphasizes the significance of managing your expectations when it comes to tree growth. Rusty also encourages gardeners to use the fall season to start planning the year ahead. He advises assessing your garden to determine which plants might be too generous next year, leading to an abundance of seeds. Instead, disperse seeds strategically to create a naturalistic garden, using plants like Little Bluestem and Gayfeather.

Plus, Jen gives us tips to get your bromeliad and amaryllis to bloom while Rusty advises a viewer on how to add sulfur to their garden.
