GOP Taps Michaels For County Auditor

A Republican county board member from Rantoul will be the next Champaign County Auditor.

GOP leaders have nominated Diane Michaels to be Champaign County’s next Auditor. Michaels will replace John Farney, who’s stepping down January 1, to become county Treasurer.

Michaels is a retired banker who’s been on the county board for eight years, serving on its Finance Committee. "My closeness to the subject, and my current closeness to the subject made it very easy for me to be consistent with what’s going in in that office," she said.

As auditor, Michaels says she’ll make sure the county follows all regulations and procedures. She says she’s also strive for fiscal transparency as the public has a right to know what the county does with its tax dollars.

Michaels plans to run for auditor in 2018. She’ll be facing Democrat George Danos, who lost the 2016 election for auditor to Farney by just 36 votes.
