“Powdery Substance” At Decatur Correctional Center Found To Be Safe
State Corrections officials say an unknown powdery substance in a plastic bag that was mailed to the Decatur Correctional Center has been tested and found to be non-hazardous.
The discovery of the unknown powder at the correctional center’s mailroom brought a Decatur Fire Department Haz-Mat team to the correctional center Thursday afternoon. The FBI was also called in.
Inmates were sent to their cells when the powder was reported, and have remained there. The Decatur Correctional Center’s administration area was evacuated, and 27 employees were examined by medical personnel, and found to be fine.
Corrections officials say further tests are needed to determine exactly what the powdery substance is. Corrections Director S. A. Godinez says the department’s Investigations and Intelligence unit will thoroughly investigate the matter.
