UI Trustees Finalize Agreement With Carle For Medical School

University of Illinois trustees have agreed to a deal to finalize the structure of and financial arrangements for a new medical school in Urbana, partnering with the Carle Foundation.  Trustees unanimously voted Thursday in Chicago to name the new medical school Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

Under the deal, the hospital's promised $100 million contribution to the medical school also will remain the same even if the hospital changed ownership.

The new medical school will focus on engineering and technology in medicine.

Under the financial terms, Carle will provide $50 million over the next five years, and another $50 million in similar payments once the new school earns provisional accrediation.  The U of I pledges $135 million in donations over eight years to support the new college, which would open in the fall of 2018.

During their regular quarterly meeting, trustees also appointed Jeffrey Brown as dean of the Urbana-Champaign College of Business, Vikram David Amar as dean of the College of Law and Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko as dean of the Graduate College.
