Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a measure Monday allowing automatic voter registration in Illinois. Illinois joins more than half a dozen other states with some form of automatic registration, which proponents say boosts civic participation.
The Illinois Senate passed legislation Friday that’s meant to increase voter registration automatically. Just a few months ago, Democrats failed to override Governor Rauner’s veto of automatic voter registration. The new version is intended to address his concerns. It would automatically add people to the rolls when they interact with government, such as when getting a driver’s license.
State Rep. Carol Ammons (D-Urbana) hopes to see another attempt at passing Illinois' automatic voter registration measure when House lawmakers return to Springfield early next month. Her chamber fell four votes shy of overriding Gov. Bruce Rauner's veto of that measure this week.
