The Piatt County Board, Normal Town Council and the Decatur City Council all voted this week to approve a consent decree meant to keep future hazardous waste out of the Clinton Landfill. But local officials in Urbana, Forsyth and Champaign County delayed their decision.

Under a proposed consent decree, local governments would refrain from efforts to force the Clinton Landfill to remove manufactured gas plant waste, but the landfill to beef up its safety precautions.

The bill that passed the Senate Thursday (HB 1326) deals with manufactured gas plant waste, which is called 'very dangerous' by co-sponsor Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet.)  The measure was inspired by efforts to keep PCB's out of the Clinton Landfill.

DeWitt County Board members voted 9 to 2 to approve a new host agreement with Peoria Disposal/Area Disposal, which owns the landfill.

The legislation appears designed to block the Clinton Landfill in DeWitt County from accepting PCB or manufactured gas plant waste.
