Mayoral Candidates Look Downtown In Second Debate

In their second debate, the three women seeking the Democratic nomination for Urbana mayor weighed in on downtown and 'family friendly' events, but also had a chance to highlight what set them apart, each answering questions direct specifically about them. An audience of about 100 attended the event at Riggs Brewery, hosted by the Champaign County Young Democrats, Chambana Moms, and Smile Politely.

Mayoral Candidate Marlin Gets Endorsement Of Local Police, Fire

An Urbana City Council member running for mayor says she wants to strengthen ties between emergency personnel, saying it will make the community safer. Alderwoman Diane Marlin picked up the endorsement Monday of Urbana Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 70 and Urbana Firefighters Local 1147. “Anytime you have an organization - the more dialogue, communication, and collaboration you have among departments makes the city work better," she said.

Urbana Mayoral Candidates Debate Crime, Economy

In the first debate for Urbana mayor, the three Democrats - all women - focused on two main themes - crime and policing, as well as business development and taxes. About 60 people filled the Urbana City Building to watch Monday's event organized by the League of Women Voters of Champaign County. The three-way Democratic primary pits incumbent Mayor Laurel Prussing against Alderwoman Diane Marlin and Rev. Evelyn Burnett Underwood.

Republican Bradfield Launches Third Attempt At Urbana Mayor

Engineer and land surveyor Rex Bradfield is launching another campaign for the office of Urbana mayor. With three Democrats in the race, that means there will be a competitive general election for the office in April. Bradfield has twice lost to incumbent Laurel Prussing, in 2009 and 2013. He says Urbana city government needs to to more to lure business to the city, and says funds have been wasted on downtown projects like the Boneyard Creek beautification.
