Hundreds of people rallied in Springfield Wednesday to push for state funding for higher education, even as news broke of possible layoffs in the fall at the University of Illinois.

A new higher education bill would give state universities a third of their usual state funding, and pay for one semester of MAP grants for low-income students.

The state budget impasse means that high school seniors choosing a college are now having to take the school’s financial stability into account.
