Illinois has filed a lawsuit alleging that the company that provides water to the Chicago suburb of University Park caused lead to contaminate the village's drinking water.

The Champaign Federation of Teachers is calling on the Champaign Unit 4 School administration to take immediate action to ensure clean drinking water at all the schools in the district.

Illinois elementary schools and day care centers must test drinking water sources for lead and notify parents of the results under legislation signed into law Monday by Gov. Bruce Rauner. The plan for required one-time testing takes effect immediately and applies to schools with students up to grade 5 and facilities built before 2000.

To this day, Flint's water is still not safe to drink without a filter. While funding has been scarce to fix corroded pipes, Congress reached a deal this week that could send millions of dollars in aid to Flint.

Galesburg Register-Mail reporter Marty Hobe says that while tests of Galesburg tap water reveals high lead levels, the problem there is not the same as the problem facing Flint, Michigan.
