Illinois lawmakers have approved major changes in the way the state gets its electricity. Nuclear power plants will be kept online, and solar and wind developments will continue to grow. Meanwhile, coal and natural gas power plants are expected to gradually be taken offline.

A lawsuit filed Monday in Champaign County Circuit Court contends that contamination from a natural gas leak north of Mahomet has spread to additional residential water wells.

Two measures designed to protect the public from future natural gas leaks at the Peoples Gas underground storage field in Champaign County passed the state Senate Thursday and now head to the Illinois House.

The Illinois State Senator representing much of the area covered by the Mahomet Aquifer, says he’s got ideas for a task force looking at ways to protect the aquifer from future accidental contamination. 

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has filed a lawsuit against Peoples Gas over a natural gas leak north of Mahomet in Champaign County.
