The new solar farm is the first solar power installation in east central Illinois large enough to be considered "utility grade", generating enough electricity to power 700 average American homes.

The newest crop at the U of I South Farms will not be fruits or vegetables, but electricity. A solar farm is expected to begin supplying some of the electricty used on the Urbana campus by Thanksgiving.
