Western Illinois University President Jack Thomas said his final day on the job will be June 30, 2019, ending a presidency marred by employee layoffs, declining student enrollment, and increasing tensions between the administration and faculty. 

Western Illinois University emailed layoff notices on Friday to 132 employees, which is about 8% of the total workforce.

Illinois beat Western Illinois 34-14 in college football Saturday, but the victory came with a price.

Union faculty at Western Illinois will vote later this month on a possible strike. 

There are 9,469 students enrolled at Western Illinois University at Macomb this spring semester. It's the first time this century Western's student body has dropped below 10,000.
