Interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson On Creating A More Welcoming Campus For Students Of Color

 

When University of Illinois students came back to campus last week, Interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson greeted them with a YouTube video message to welcome them back to a new calendar year and to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The first commenter questioned why Wilson was giving students "another diversity lesson." 

At least one study of University of Illinois students of color shows that more than half say they've felt stereotyped in a classroom because of their race. 

We sat down with the Chancellor to talk to her about how to reach students who agree with that sentiment, and how she thinks she can help create a more inclusive campus that welcomes all students of color.
