Julian Hayda spent most of his life in Illinois. He earned two degrees from DePaul University, and spent several years as a producer on “Worldview," a public affairs program on Chicago public radio station WBEZ. He also worked for a short time as a producer on The 21st. In late 2021, he decided to pursue a different calling: enrolling at a seminary in Kyiv.

Now, the war has prompted him to return to journalism and he’s working with an NPR team as a freelance producer, fixer, reporter, and translator in the western city of Lviv, Ukraine.

Brian Mackey taped a conversation with Hayda on Friday, March 11.
