Lincoln Presidential Museum displays Black freedom struggle captured in bronze and steel sculptures

Maquette for Hero Ascending, 2024, cast bronze on loan from The Richard Hunt Trust and exterior of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield. Sculpture by Nathan Keay/Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum in Springfield, Museum exterior by Reginald Hardwick/IPM News
Sculptor Richard Hunt was born in Chicago 1935. He spent most of his life living and working in the city. Much of his life’s work would be focused on the Black experience in America — the pain, the hope, and the fight for equality. By the end of his life, in 2023, Hunt was said to have created more public sculptures than any other artist in American history. Hunt’s work is the subject of an exhibition at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield.
