....music (Strauss' "An Alpine Symphony") that's reflective of the region it was composed in.
If you are not familiar with "Nights..." by Falla, it's essentially a piano concerto, and a beautiful one at that.
"Nights in the Gardens of Spain", plus a piano concerto, and a few symphonies from various US locales.
Sonata for Flute, Viola, & Harp by Debussy, plus an assorted combinations of instruments.
Also on the program: Ligeti's "Violin Concerto" and Kodaly's "Dances of Galanta"
Plus, Daniil Trifonov plays Prokofiev's "2nd Piano Concerto"; Michael Tilson Thomas guest conducts.
It's a trip in the "way-back" machine on tonight's "Chicago Symphony Orchestra Radio Broadcast", a Frederick Stock retrospective. Stock was the first conductor of the CSO.
Music by Debussy, Berlioz, and Ravel on the program: Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, Harold in Italy, and the Noble and Sentimental Waltzes.
