Pruning Tips with Ryan Pankau

Pruning can feel intimidating, but understanding a few key principles can make all the difference and that’s why we’ve spent so much time talking about pruning on MidAmerican Gardener.
In this episode, host Tinisha Spain is joined by horticulture educator Ryan Pankau from University of Illinois Extension to walk through the science and strategy behind proper tree and shrub pruning.
Why Pruning Matters
Trees in natural forests grow tall and straight due to competition for light. In our yards, however, trees grow more freely, often developing clusters of branches that can lead to structural weakness. Pruning helps recreate that natural strength by guiding proper form and reducing risk of breakage.

Timing Is Everything
The best time to prune most trees is during dormancy, typically late winter into early spring. During this period:
Trees have stored energy reserves
Pruning minimizes energy loss
Wounds heal more efficiently
Avoid pruning during:
Leaf-out and flowering (energy loss)
Late fall (can trigger vulnerable new growth)
