The Republican State Convention held in Peoria over the weekend produced a platform that retains a committment to traditional marriage; meanwhile party leaders called for unity behind the November ticket, while rarely mentioning presumptive nominee Donald Trump.
Champaign fire officials said fire crews would remain at the Alloy Engineering and Casting foundry on the city’s west side on Saturday, to put out any spot fires, following the three-alarm blaze that burned there for more than five hours overnight. Later Saturday, officials there were eager to begin assessing the damage, and to see what it would take to get the site up and going again.
U of I history professor Adrian Burgos learned through his family, and his love for baseball, that Latin players played a large role in the game since its early days. Burgos' research is the focus of "Playing America's Game", which includes interviews with Hall of Famer Dave Winfield, and current Chicago White Sox slugger Jose Abreu.
