The top Democrat in the Illinois House, House Speaker Michael Madigan, told the City Club of Chicago Wednesday that Illinois' income tax should be restored to the five percent level it was at until January. But Madigan later clarified his comments, saying he has no plans to introduce such legislation.
While the larger issue of a state budget remains unsolved, two area social service agencies are among those that expect to see Illinois' share of its funding this month. They include Champaign-based Courage Connection, which will soon see nearly all its $400,000 that was expected in July.
WIU officials say cuts in higher education funding and declining enrollment require them to eliminate approximately 50 faculty positions in the 2016-17 academic year, and eliminate or modify several administrative and support staff positions --- and more spending cuts are being considered.
