The city of Decatur has named Jim Getz, most recently a deputy chief, as its new police chief.

The city said in a news release Friday that the 17-year veteran of the Decatur Police Department will permanently take over the role he has filled on an interim basis since February.

The position opened when the city fired Brad Sweeney in February without public explanation.

According to the Herald & Review in Decatur, Getz will be paid $127,700 a year.

In the news release, Mayor Julie Moore Wolfe said Getz had impressed her with his accessibility and willingness to work with various groups in the central Illinois city.
