The Schumann "Cello Concerto" was composed in 1850. The premiere, sad to say, was made four years after Schumann's death. Mendelssohn's 5th Symphony pre-dates the Schumann "Cello Concerto" by 20 years.
Haydn's Opus 77, No. 1 string quartet (1799) and Mendelssohn's Opus 44, No. 1 string quartet (1837) are separated by less than 40 years, yet there's a world of difference between the two stylistically speaking.
Music Director Riccardo Muti put together this program of music by Italian composers and works inspired by Italy, like Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony.
