Significant parts of Illinois were under flash flood warnings yesterday morning — some saw as much as 14 inches of rain in the space of 12 hours. The 21st spoke with an Illinois Public Media reporter who has following the aftermath of the central Illinois storms.

Urban flooding is most notable for flooded streets and flooded basements, especially due to storm sewer backups. This type of flooding occurs in all of the counties in Illinois and usually happens in older sections of town where the infrastructure is old and also in subdivisions that were built in the 1950's and 1960's.

In Illinois, for example, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently reported a decline in the health of the state’s corn plants for the second week in a row. In Missouri, farmers only had half of their soybeans planted by June 20th, the USDA’s official end of the planting season for the area.
