The Chicago river was blue from dye and baseball fans in Chicago celebrated the Cubs win in the World Series with a parade. As is the case with every city celebration of a team's win, the streets were lined with fans and at the end players and team management address a large crowd. City officials estimate some 5 million people took part in the parade.

But county officials say the work on the jail is needed, as part of plans to maintain all Champaign County government buildings.

The wait 'til next year is finally over. The Chicago Cubs are World Series champions. Ending more than a century of flops, futility and frustration, the Cubs won their first title since 1908, outlasting the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in 10 innings of a Game 7 thriller early Thursday. "It happened. It happened. Chicago, it happened," first baseman Anthony Rizzo said. "We did it. We're world champions. I tell ya, we're world champions. I can't believe it."

A suspect is being sought in the killing of two police officers in the Des Moines, Iowa, area. The two officers were shot and killed early Wednesday as they sat in their squad cars.
"The shootings appear to have been ambush-style attacks," police spokesman Paul Parizek said in a statement.

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier has been sworn in as the 120th chief justice of the state's highest court in a ceremony in Springfield. The 76-year-old Karmeier was sworn in Monday by Justice Rita Garman, who served three years as chief justice. In remarks, Karmeier thanked his colleges for their support, adding that they "hold a special place" in his heart.

Voters in Champaign County have three countywide referenda on the ballot this year. Two of them are dueling proposals about whether to elect a countywide board chair or executive. The third would raise the county’s sales tax one quarter of a percentage point for a period of twelve years, with the revenue slated to go toward facilities projects, including an expanded county jail at the satellite location in east Urbana.
