Ray Spooner, Who Cycled Cross Country After ALS Diagnosis, Dies

An Urbana man who set out to cycle across the country last year after being diagnosed with ALS has died. Ray Spooner was injured on that ride, but was determined to finish. Last November, he dipped the front wheel of his bicycle into the Atlantic Ocean and crossed one more item off his bucket list.

County Voters May Face 1/4 Cent Sales Tax Plan For Facilities

Voters in Champaign County could be asked this fall to support a 1/4-cent sales tax to address facilities needs. County Board Chair Rick Snider says priorities include closing the downtown Urbana jail, and expansion of the satellite site, as well closing the Brookens Administrative Center to move county government to downtown Urbana. The county board would have to approve the plan by August 18 for the question to appear on the November ballot.

Rauner Vetoes U Of I Student Trustee Bill

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner has vetoed a bill backed by the University of Illinois that would have allowed a nonresident student to serve as a student trustee. This means three criteria will remain in place - living in Illinois for least six months, proof of residency, and being a registered voter in Illinois. The measure that failed would have only required one of the three.

BBL Academy And U Of I’s Krannert Center Present ‘Dreamgirls’

The weekend performances at Krannert's Studio Theatre are part of a nearly three-year partnership with the Banks Bridgewater Lewis Fine Arts Academy, and partially made possible through a grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. The show includes a cast of 24, and 13-piece orchestra. The shows are sold out, but Krannert has set up a waiting list for any returned tickets.
