Last night, a crowd of about 150 gathered to draw messages in chalk across the University of Illinois campus as part of an event hosted by one sorority to raise awareness about police brutality.
A fatal shooting in Champaign’s Campustown neighborhood has shaken the nearby University of Illinois campus, as well as the hospital where the victim was expected to start work this week.
Authorities say five people were shot, one of them fatally, in two separate overnight shootings within minutes of each other near the University of Illinois Campus. Police say in a news release that they believe the two shootings may be related. The person who died is identified as George Korchev of Mundelein. The other three were taken to a hospital for treatment of what police called non-critical gunshot wounds.
About 80 University of Illinois students attended a rally on the Urbana campus quad Friday, as student groups addressed "a society of rape culture", not only in the number of reported sexual assaults, but in overall attitudes. Groups represented included Students Against Sexual Assault, the Women's Resource Center, and Black Students for Revolution.
Five individuals and organizations will be honored Saturday afternoon in Urbana for their service in welcoming immigrants to Champaign County.
