Inclement weather has forced the cancellation of the Illinois Marathon for a number of runners by mid-morning Saturday.

"Because of lightning in the area the Illinois Marathon has been halted and will be cancelled," said race spokeperson Rick Atterberry, in a statement to media.

"Buses will operate along the race route to pick up runners still on the course."

Atterberry said If residents and businesses along the Marathon route can provide shelter to runners on the course until the buses can pick them up it will be appreciated.   The runners may be chilled because of the rain and they may need some blankets.
