A fatal shooting in Champaign’s Campustown neighborhood has shaken the nearby University of Illinois campus, as well as the hospital where the victim was expected to start work this week.

Authorities say five people were shot, one of them fatally, in two separate overnight shootings within minutes of each other near the University of Illinois Campus. Police say in a news release that they believe the two shootings may be related. The person who died is identified as George Korchev of Mundelein. The other three were taken to a hospital for treatment of what police called non-critical gunshot wounds.

Bloomington physician David Gill has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court with hopes of restoring his name to the ballot in the race for Illinois' 13th Congressional District. He wants justices to vacate the stay entered by a federal appeals court that forced his name from the November 8 ballot. The four-time Democratic candidate for the office is running as an independent for the first time.
