The Evening Concert

Beethoven's "Second Piano Concerto" in B-flat major was actually the first to be composed but the second to be published. Regardless of that historical fact, this concerto is one of Beethoven's "more cheerful" works.

Concerto: A genre of classical music which is usually in a three-part form: first movement: fast; second movement: slow, third movement: fast. Brahms 2nd Piano Concerto is sometimes considered to be a symphony (because it has four movements) with piano obbligato....

Dvorak spent time in Spillville, Iowa summer of 1893 and from that came his famous "American String Quartet" (not heard tonight) followed by his Viola Quintet (String Quaintet No. 3) (heard tonight). The two pieces exhibiti musical and stylisitic similarities.

Haydn's "Sun" Quartets [his Opus 20] are called that because there is an image of the sun on the cover of the publication of those six string quartets.

This is the concert from 07/18/14, the first one after the passing of Maestro Lorin Maazel.

Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas selected the pieces for this concert and the subsequent CD release, plus Yuja Wang joins the SFS for Prokofiev's 1st Piano Concerto

Aging quite nicely (over 100 years now!) the famous "The Rite of Springs" still provokes.

On tonight's program from "Music Mountain" you'll hear Mozart's 6th String Quartet which dates from 1773, and Schubert's 15th String Quartet, his last, which dates from 1826.
